CSAs

CSAs are a way to support our local agriculture. We have always shopped at the farmer's market near our home, but Deb pointed this one out to me and I'm very tempted to join! Brad's is farther from us because it's out on 136 between Churchville and Belcamp. There is no guarantee of what you will get for your share, but it is a way to support our local farms to help keep them going by investing in them up front at the beginning of the season.

There are two CSAs nearby that I know of:
1) Flying Plow Farm is an organic farm near Mtn. Christian Church off of Jerusalem Mill Rd.
Full Share $700
Small Share $450

2) Brad's Produce (not organic)
Full Share $475
Full Share Bi-Weekly $275
Half Share Weekly $300

  1. I love CSA's, but we don't have any locally. I could drive about 40 minutes to pick up each week, but 15 passenger vans use a lot of gas :) I need two shares to do it right, and I'm not sure if that would make our garden not cost effective.

My goal is to start our own CSA right here. We hope to fence our pasture this year and want to start a meat and milk, cow/sheep flerd. We started chickens last month, and we're looking into geese or turkeys for this month or next. Next year I plan to start bee hives. I like knowing where my food comes from and how it was treated/fed.

I have a friend that runs a small CSA about an hour and a half away. It's very popular and she sells out each season. It's hard on her though because her husband's working full time away and she homeschools. I wouldn't want to go public till the kids are quite a bit older, but I'm ready to start learning animal husbandry now.

Anyway, I like this blog, I've not read it before (I don't think). Good job!

  2. Thank you my friend for your compliment =) that means a lot coming from you!

I think that would be awesome if you were able to start a CSA--even if it was just with a few friends.

My hope is that in a few years when the kids are a little older, we'll be able to bake and take some things to the farmer's market to help the kids learn about cooking, money, etc. I'm hoping it will be a good way for us to dip our toes into the water with small business owning. Someday it is a dream of ours to own a small business =)--just not sure what kind yet!
